During a recent event, a former National Security Council staffer from the Clinton administration spoke out, surprisingly commending President Donald Trump for his military action against Iran. Jamie Metzle, the founder of International Group Shared World, expressed, “I’m not typically supportive of many of Trump’s actions, but I’ll honestly give credit where it’s due when he takes strong steps to protect America’s interests.” He shared this sentiment on social media over the weekend.
Metzle, who previously served on the National Security Association under President Bill Clinton and was involved with Joe Biden’s Senate Foreign Relations Committee, had some sharp words for Vice President Kamala Harris, suggesting she lacked the necessary bravery to take decisive actions similar to Trump’s military strike. “I think electing Harris would be beneficial for democracy and society, but honestly, she didn’t have the courage to act as decisively as the president did,” he noted.
His comments highlight a growing divide among Democratic voices—many of whom traditionally criticize Trump—yet are now acknowledging his recent actions against Iran’s nuclear program. Metzle pointed out that Iran has posed a consistent threat to the U.S. for decades and stressed the specificity of its nuclear ambitions.
“Iran has been at war with the United States for 46 years,” he commented, adding that the regime has directly harmed American citizens and poses a severe threat with its ambitions for nuclear weapons.
Trump’s military strike—which he has labeled a “significant success”—was directed at three critical nuclear sites in Iran. He underscored that the aim was to dismantle Iran’s nuclear capabilities, which he believes is crucial for lasting peace in the Middle East. In his national address, he emphasized that “Addressing the threat posed by Iran is at the heart of America’s national security.”
Interestingly, some prominent figures, including Senator John Fetterman, have sided with Trump, claiming the strike was the “right move” given Iran’s background as a sponsor of terrorism. Meanwhile, other Democrats, such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have criticized Trump’s actions, questioning the legality of bypassing Congressional approval.
Trump’s announcement of the strike came quite suddenly, right after a brief speech to the public following his social media post. He claimed the attack was meticulously planned and executed with high precision and secrecy, marking it as one of the largest military strikes in recent history.
This operation, dubbed Operation Midnight Hammer, occurred after stalled negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program and followed a pivotal strike initiated by Israel earlier that month. The situation is undeniably complex, reflecting both the high stakes involved and the sometimes contradictory responses from political leaders.
