James Comey Pleads Not Guilty to Federal Charges

Former FBI Director James Comey has entered a not guilty plea to accusations that he provided false statements to Congress in 2020 about the FBI’s investigation into President Donald Trump’s connections with Russia.

The charges, which included making false statements and obstructing Congress, were brought against him in September by a Department of Justice led by Attorney General Pam Bondi.

According to the indictment, Comey allegedly impeded Congressional proceedings by claiming that he did not give permission for FBI personnel to act as anonymous sources for the media during his testimony in 2020.

This testimony related to the controversial investigation into alleged collusion between Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and Russia, known as “Crossfire Hurricane.” The investigation began in July 2016, before Trump’s election victory, and Comey was dismissed from his position in May 2017.

Upon his departure, Robert Mueller was appointed as special counsel to oversee the investigation, which concluded in March 2019 without finding any evidence of criminal collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian officials.

Following the Mueller investigation, John Durham was assigned as special counsel in 2020 to probe the original Crossfire Hurricane investigation.

Durham found that the FBI was targeted by a campaign led by Hillary Clinton aimed at influencing the law enforcement process for political ends prior to the 2016 election.

Moreover, Durham pointed out significant failures by the FBI to act on evident warning signs suggesting they were being manipulated politically during the original investigation.

“The foregoing facts reflect a rather surprising and inexplicable failure to adequately consider and incorporate Clinton Plan information into the FBI’s investigative decision-making in the Crossfire Hurricane investigation,” Durham’s report stated.

“Indeed, if the FBI had initiated the Crossfire Hurricane investigation as an evaluation and had collected and analyzed data in conjunction with information from the Clinton Plan intelligence community, it is likely that the information it received would have at least been examined more critically,” the report continued.

Durham noted that the failure to act on these indicators should have been a clear indication that the FBI might be targeted for political influence during the 2016 election.

In a hearing before U.S. District Judge Michael Nachmanoff, Comey pleaded not guilty. If found guilty, he could face a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Following his indictment, Comey released a video where he categorically denied the charges.

“My family and I have known for years that standing up to Donald Trump would come at a cost, but we couldn’t imagine living any other way,” he said in an Instagram video. “We are not going to live on our knees, and neither should you. Someone I love dearly recently said that fear is a tool of tyranny, and she is right.”

“But I’m not afraid,” he added. “My heart breaks for the Department of Justice, but I have great faith in the federal judicial system and I am innocent, so let’s go to trial and stand up for what we believe.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi also made a statement following the indictment, emphasizing that accountability is essential and that “no one is above the law.”

She stated that the charges reflect the Department of Justice’s commitment to holding those in power accountable for misleading the public. “We will follow the facts of this case,” she asserted.

The trial is set to begin on January 5th.
