Claims of ICE Actions Spark Controversy
Former MSNBC host Tiffany Cross made a bold statement on Tuesday night, suggesting that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were “inviting” undocumented immigrants and transporting them to what she referred to as “concentration camps.”
President Donald Trump has prioritized illegal immigration in his second term, previously campaigning on this issue and issuing multiple executive orders regarding immigration and border security since taking office on January 20th. Cross asserted that ICE was “destroying people,” which prompted significant discussion.
“This is a challenge I have, even to talk about this,” Cross remarked. “We’re normalizing government agencies that destroy people. It’s like we’re discussing it as if it’s not a big deal for them to lure people and take them to concentration camps, both here and overseas.”
As she spoke, New York Post editor Kelly Jane Torrance attempted to interject, stating, “I think it’s kind of insulting –,” but Cross cut her off as the conversation grew tense.
Torrance later countered Cross’s claims by saying, “These have gas chambers. They’re not death camps.” She expressed a viewpoint that, regardless of terminology, the implications are severe.
Trump has designated various groups, including the Mexican drug cartel and El Salvador’s MS-13 gang, as foreign terrorist organizations. Additionally, he has invoked a 1798 law known as the Alien Enemies Act to expedite the deportation of gang members.
Protests against ICE operations began to spread following enforcement actions in June, initially igniting in Los Angeles before extending to several other cities. Recent violent incidents in Texas involved attempts to attack ICE facilities, resulting in multiple arrests.
The Department of Homeland Security has not responded to inquiries regarding these escalating tensions and actions.
Opposition to ICE’s operations also includes local officials, such as a judge in Milwaukee who has reportedly aided undocumented immigrants during ICE enforcement actions, and Democratic Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell, who disclosed the names of ICE agents conducting operations in the area.
In New York City, an incident on June 18 involved accusations against Democratic mayoral candidate Brad Lander and New Jersey Rep. Ramonica McQuiver for obstructing ICE agents during a court operation.
