Former Muslim Challenges Perceptions of Islam

Danny Burmawi, a former Muslim and founder of the Ideological Defense Institute, holds a unique perspective on Islam, which he argues extends beyond just a religion. In an interview, he told Glenn Beck of Blaze Media that people commonly equate Islam with Christianity, but he insists that’s a misconception.

“When you think of Islam, picture the United States of America or France or China,” he explains. “Because Islam is, in essence, a state. Just as the U.S. has a constitution, Islam has Sharia. And the population practicing it is made up of Muslims. Therefore, Muslims are more comparable to Americans than to Christians.”

Glenn Beck expressed his disbelief, suggesting that this perspective—coming straight from mosques claiming intentions of implementing Sharia—is often overlooked. “They are essentially stating they will overthrow the existing constitution wherever they are,” Beck states. He observes this pattern across multiple nations.

Burmawi, however, cautions against conflating the actions of extremists with the beliefs held by the majority of Muslims. He argues that most do not subscribe to the extremist ideologies and, if they did, they would fit better within groups like ISIS. “Islam lacks practicality, leading to what I call cognitive dissonance among Muslims,” he said, reflecting on his own experiences. “When your belief system contradicts reality, it creates confusion.”

He believes that about 1% of the roughly five to six million Muslims in the U.S. are genuinely adherent to all teachings of Muhammad, which raises alarm for him. “That means around 50,000 individuals who could be ISIS sympathizers are potentially present in America,” he asserts.
