Ex-Navy pilot set to challenge Ciattarelli in tight race for New Jersey governor

Democratic Gubernatorial Primary in New Jersey

Morristown, New Jersey – On Tuesday evening, the Democratic primary for governor was held, and it looks like Cheryl will be the key winner.

The Associated Press forecasts that Cheryl will emerge victorious in the Democratic primary, competing against former GOP state legislator Jack Ciattarelli, who aims to succeed Democrat Phil Murphy due to term limits. Cheryl outperformed a crowded field of Democratic contenders, which included Newark Mayor Steve Fulop, New Jersey Education Association President Sean Spiller, former Senator Steve Sweeney, and Congressman Josh Gottheimer.

Interestingly, the campaign trail in New Jersey has seen candidates from both parties referencing former President Donald Trump. Democrats have positioned themselves against Trump, while Republicans, including Ciattarelli, have sought his endorsement. It’s almost like a tug-of-war over Trump’s legacy and ideals.

New Jersey and Virginia are the only two states holding gubernatorial races in 2025, and both will undoubtedly serve as a bellwether for public sentiment leading up to the midterm elections next year.

As they vie for the nomination, Democratic candidates have had to tread carefully, balancing promises of change while grappling with the implications of Murphy’s legacy. Like Murphy, these candidates often find themselves dealing with the fallout from Trump’s policies, particularly those relating to immigration.

Cheryl, who is a U.S. Navy veteran and serves as an outreach and re-entry coordinator, expressed her strong support for safety, arguing against Trump’s portrayal that she claims fuels violence. After casting her vote in Montclair, she mentioned that Trump’s remarks could escalate tensions.

Congressman Gottheimer criticized Trump’s decision to send National Guard troops to California, deeming it “outrageous” to proceed without the governor’s request. It’s a hefty point of contention that has emerged alongside the ongoing protests in Los Angeles.

In the background, Democratic candidate Ras Baraka has also stirred some controversy, recently facing legal troubles and claiming his arrest for trespassing was unjust. Support for Baraka has become part of the larger Democratic strategy amidst this chaotic political landscape.

As the dust settles, it seems the upcoming gubernatorial race is not merely a contest of candidates but also a battle of narratives, with Trump’s influence looming large. Not to mention, many candidates carry the weight of the political ramifications far beyond New Jersey, as they prepare for an election cycle that’s already shaping up to be contentious.
