Cuomo Critiques Mamdani’s Use of Rent-Controlled Apartment
Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo took aim at Zoran Mamdani, a rival in the New York City mayoral race, on Friday. He highlighted Mamdani’s residence in a rent-stabilized apartment while also pointing out the latter’s significant wealth.
Cuomo posted on X, stating, “Last night, somewhere in New York City, a single mother and her kids slept in a homeless shelter for you, the councillors, while Mamdani occupies a rent-controlled apartment that costs $2,300 a month.” His comments were accompanied by a video clip.
Cuomo, who lost the Democratic primary to Mamdani yet continues to challenge him as an independent in the upcoming general election, urged his opponents to vacate their apartments for those in more dire need of subsidies. He underscored Mamdani’s affluent background, noting his six-figure income and international property holdings. Additionally, Cuomo mentioned that Mamdani’s wife is also gainfully employed.
“No matter which way you look at it, Zohran Mamdani is affluent,” Cuomo remarked. “You and your wife pay $2,300 for a nice apartment in Astoria, all while boasting about it. That space should be available for those who genuinely need it.”
Cuomo also addressed the pressing affordable housing crisis in New York City, pointing out that many low-income residents are struggling to find reasonably priced apartments. He referenced that the median rent in the city has surged to $3,397, an increase of almost $200 since 2024.
In his post, Cuomo called for urgent action, urging that it’s time for leaders to demonstrate moral clarity. He said, “I’m urging you to act swiftly and return these apartments to families that truly require affordable living.” Earlier this week, he had criticized Mamdani for owning property in Uganda, especially given the country’s anti-LGBT policies.
A spokesperson for Cuomo expressed concern over Mamdani’s apparent incongruity: “To date, Zohran Mamdani and his campaign have been avoiding scrutiny. He talks like Bernie Sanders, but lives like Jeff Bezos. Handing over the keys of New York City to someone so disconnected seems unwise. Councillor hypocrisy isn’t the answer. Andrew Cuomo aims to reshape New York City by ensuring real affordability and opportunities for those who genuinely need it.”
As of now, there hasn’t been a response from a spokesperson for Mamdani regarding Cuomo’s statements.
