Michele Tafoya Wins Minnesota Republican Senate Primary

Former sportscaster Michele Tafoya emerged victorious in Tuesday’s Minnesota Republican Senate primary.

The four-time Emmy Award-winning journalist entered the race last February after incumbent Sen. Tina Smith (D-Minn.) announced she wouldn’t seek re-election.

Tafoya secured 51% of the vote, leading former Navy SEAL Adam Schwartz who garnered 22%, and ex-professional basketball player Royce White, who received 9%.

Known for her more than a decade-long career reporting on the NFL for ABC, ESPN, and NBC, Tafoya campaigned as an outsider. She promised to bring “common sense” to Washington and flip Smith’s Senate seat.

Before polls closed, Tafoya expressed her enthusiasm on social media, stating, “Minnesota is the game. We have a real chance to flip the Senate in November and defeat the far-left Socialist Democratic Party.”

Her campaign is supported by the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC). However, it’s worth noting that President Trump hasn’t endorsed her, and Minnesota Republicans opted to endorse Schwartz at their convention in May.

Tafoya has been outspoken on various political issues, advocating for a crackdown on fraud, supporting mandatory minimum sentences for convicted fraudsters, and calling for the deportation of illegal immigrants who misuse taxpayer funds.

Additionally, she pledged to “fight tooth and nail” against efforts to abolish ICE and emphasized support for the SAVE Act in Congress, along with issues like keeping men out of women’s sports.

Her broadcasting career began at Minneapolis radio station KFAN, where she covered the Minnesota Vikings and the University of Minneapolis before joining CBS in 1994.

It’s notable that Minnesota hasn’t elected a Republican to the Senate since 2002. Tafoya is expected to face either Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan or U.S. Rep. Angie Craig (D-Minnesota) in the upcoming general election in November.
