A former NYPD detective shot and killed his wife while caring for their three children at their Westchester County home, then turned the gun on himself and killed himself, police said Wednesday.
Sean O'Neal, 54, fired multiple shots at his wife, Arlene O'Neal, a fifth-grade teacher in Tuckahoe, before shooting himself in the head after an argument shortly after 7 a.m., Yonkers police said in a statement. He said he fired one shot.
Police said paramedics tried to save Arlene O'Neill, 47, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The couple, who have three children, were at home at the time of the incident and were not physically injured,” police said in a statement. “They are now in the care of their families.”
Arlene O'Neal was a teacher at Ann Hutchinson School in the Eastchester School District, Superintendent Ronald D. Valenti said in a message to parents.
All three of the couple's children are students in the district.
Officials said Sean O'Neill was working as a detective when he retired last year.
