Ex-prison guard who had affair with Susan Smith opposes her parole

The former prison guard boyfriend of murderer's mother Susan Smith believes she should not be released on parole, and suggested in a new interview that she “hasn't actually learned anything” from 30 years incarcerated.

Alfred Rowe said News NationAshleigh Banfield Smith, 52, star of “Pretty Woman,” is serving a life sentence in South Carolina for drowning her two young sons, but behind bars she's only learned how to be a better criminal.

“Her prison record shows that, other than killing her sons, she really didn't learn anything else while in prison other than how to conduct illegal activities,” Rowe told Banfield.

Smith will be eligible for parole this year and could be released within the next few months.

Her first parole hearing is scheduled for Nov. 4.

Rowe, who had an affair with Smith and lost his job because of it, told Banfield he was likely to reoffend and violate his parole.

“I believe everyone deserves a second chance, and Susan is no exception,” Rowe began. “She deserves that chance, but there's a lot of work to be done first.”

Rowe said Smith will likely be unable to stay abstinent from drugs and alcohol, which will likely be a condition of his parole.

“She'll be back in prison soon,” he said.

“If she still likes sex as much as she did back then, she'll find a strip club too, and that would be a violation, too.”

Rowe pleaded guilty in 2001 to having sex with Smith while in prison.

“I don't know how I allowed that to happen,” he told Banfield.

“I think it was because I was young and hadn't been around that many women before… I was completely charmed by her sweet words, her manipulations and her cool attitude.”

Smith has been incarcerated at Lease Correctional Facility in Greenwood, South Carolina, for more than 20 years.

She was sentenced to life in prison for the murders of her 3-year-old son Michael and 14-month-old son Alexander in 1994 after she left the boys in their car seats and crashed her car into John D. Long Lake in Union County.

At the time, she gained notoriety after telling police that her car had been taken by a black man and then appearing on the news to plead for the safe return of her boys.

Now, 30 years later, Smith told relatives he believes he deserves to be free.

The Post previously reported that Smith had contacted her ex-husband, David, to ask if he would support her parole application.

The family said they would be “100% opposed” to her release, even if the defendant is allowed to speak at the November hearing.
