A former federal prosecutor from California expressed concerns about the integrity of the sheriff’s office involved in the investigation of the John Elway golf cart incident. The situation unfolded when Jeffrey Sperbeck, a longtime friend and agent of Elway, fell off the back of a golf cart at the Madison Club in La Quinta, California. According to a Cal Fire spokesperson, the incident was reported on March 26 at 6:50 p.m. Sperbeck sustained severe injuries and later died at Palm Springs Desert Regional Medical Center on Wednesday.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office has begun looking into the golf cart incident, although no charges have been filed against Elway. Fox News Digital confirmed that Elway has retained Denver attorney Harvey Steinberg. In a statement, the sheriff’s office noted, “There is nothing to suggest that this is anything more than a tragic accident.”
Reports indicated that Elway was driving the golf cart after leaving an afterparty. Official records place Elway just ten minutes from the Madison Club when the incident occurred. Interestingly, the sheriff’s office said they were not notified until two days later, raising questions about the handling of the situation. A spokesperson mentioned that they weren’t asked to respond since it was of a medical nature.
Neema Ramani, the former prosecutor, suggested the sheriff’s office might not be acting transparently. He mentioned it seemed odd that law enforcement hadn’t responded more promptly, leading to speculation about their motives.
In a response, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco remarked that it’s easy to critique from the outside, especially when one has retired from the law. Meanwhile, the sheriff’s office affirmed that they’d take necessary actions based on their findings from the investigation.
Elway publicly expressed his grief after Sperbeck’s death, describing him as his best friend and business partner. “I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken,” he stated, emphasizing the profound sadness he feels following this unexpected loss.
The Sperbeck family also released a heartfelt message, honoring his memory and highlighting the love and support they will miss. They cherished his role as a father, husband, and friend to many.
Elway and Sperbeck forged a friendship back in 1990, a partnership that led Sperbeck to manage Elway’s career. Besides Elway, Sperbeck represented other notable NFL figures, including Hall of Fame players such as Ronnie Lott and Jim Plunkett, and worked with many other professional athletes.
