Ex-RNC chief: Trump polling lead ahead of hush money trial an ‘abomination’

Former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said Thursday that it is “abhorrent” that former President Donald Trump is leading in the polls despite facing felony charges.

National polls show the former president leading President Biden by 0.6 percentage points, according to The Hill/Decision Desk Headquarters poll tally.

“That says a lot about us, doesn’t it?” In response to a question from MSNBC’s Stephanie Rhule, Steele said that the former RNC chairperson “is not likely to become a felon. Can you imagine leading the Republican Party in an election?” People said no. Does it seem like you care?

The argument took place four days before the former president is scheduled to go on trial in New York City on charges of a hush-money scheme.

“This article has very little to say about the party and more to say about us as a people,” said Steele, an outspoken critic of President Trump and a regular on MSNBC. “We are now allowing this to happen, putting this person in a position to vote for the next president of the United States, leading in poll after poll.”

“It’s abhorrent and shameful,” Steele added.

The former RNC chairman also said this shows a kind of desperation, that voters believe Trump will somehow solve all their problems.

“America has never expected that from one person. In the past, we all worked together to do that,” Steele said.

President Trump will hold a rally and campaign fundraiser in Pennsylvania on Saturday, 10 days before the state’s primary election and two days before the New York City trial.

The rally will be held in the Lehigh Valley, a battleground region where President Biden could win by about 14,000 votes in 2020. The fundraiser will be held in nearby Bucks County. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Bucks is another battleground state that Biden could win in 2020, defeating Trump by about 17,000 votes.
