Former NFL Player Keith Gray Convicted in Fraud Case

Keith Gray, a former offensive lineman from U.C., was found guilty in connection with a substantial fraud scheme amounting to $328 million. A jury concluded that he was involved in a conspiracy to defraud the U.S. government, which included five violations of the Anti-Kickback Act and three counts of money laundering.

With the possibility of receiving a decade-long prison sentence for each count, Gray now faces significant legal consequences.

The Justice Department indicated that his sentencing will be determined by a federal district judge, taking into account U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other relevant statutory considerations.

Gray orchestrated fraudulent billing of Medicare for unnecessary genetic tests aimed at assessing risks for various cardiovascular diseases. Despite having no medical need for these tests, he managed to pocket around $54 million.

He allegedly used the funds to purchase luxury vehicles, including a Mercedes-Benz SUV valued at over $154,000. Moreover, he attempted to hide these illegal payments to Medicare through fabricated contracts and invoices that aligned with the amounts obtained from his scheme. Additionally, he presented non-existent software and loans as part of his deception.

Gray’s football career began at UW from 2004 to 2008, where he captained the team and started all 13 games at center during the 2007 season. His dedication was evident, though injuries could have easily derailed his journey. After not being selected in the 2009 NFL Draft, he joined the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent. Following his tenure there, he found a place on the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad.

Eventually, he also played in the UFL before stepping away from professional football. After his sports career, he took up ownership of Axis Professional Labs and Kingdom Health Laboratories back in Texas.

However, his recent conviction suggests a dramatic shift in his trajectory, marking a stark end to what was once a promising life in both sports and business.
