Former U.S. Attorney Charged in Houston Hit-and-Run
Authorities report that Jennifer Lowery, a former U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Texas, has been charged with felony failure to stop and render aid following a car crash in Houston on May 14.
The incident involved a Nissan Altima, driven by Gabriel Fonseca, who told police that while driving east on Memorial Drive, another vehicle crossed into the median and hit him on the driver’s side. After the collision, Fonseca managed to pull his car to safety, but the other driver fled the scene. He also mentioned experiencing a “ringing” in his ears afterward.
Fonseca recounted, “At the last moment, I didn’t have time to change direction, so I just put down the horn. I was hit on the driver’s side. Then I heard a really loud ringing in my ears and there was dust everywhere.” He experienced confusion while attempting to call for help right after the accident.
He described how he crawled out of his car after the airbags deployed and managed to call 911. His car was reported to have damages amounting to around $35,000, and he expressed his intention to pursue charges against Lowery. “She didn’t even check to see if I was dead. It’s a selfish and despicable act to hit someone and get away with it,” he said.
A witness walking his dog at the scene informed police that he had seen the woman driving the damaged car park several blocks away. He described seeing a “white, blonde female” in her 30s or 40s behind the wheel and noted that the vehicle had significant front-end damage and was leaking fluid.
Subsequent police investigations led them to the parked car, which was found at a residence, badly damaged, with a missing bumper. The license plate was traced back to Lowery.
When police were documenting evidence, Lowery’s husband approached and identified himself as a lawyer. He acknowledged his wife’s involvement in the accident but stated he wouldn’t accept any of her statements regarding the incident.
Lowery was appointed U.S. Attorney in April 2022 after serving as interim and acting attorney since February 2021. She continued in this role until her successor took over in December 2022.
Fonseca remarked on the irony of Lowery’s situation, highlighting her previous career focused on accountability. “It’s really ironic,” he said.
