Concerns Raised Over Yale’s Athletic Leadership
A letter addressed to Yale President Maureen McInnis, signed by Keith Alleyne, the university’s former ice hockey coach, claims that current Athletic Director Victoria Chung has fostered a “toxic environment” within Yale’s sports teams.
Alleyne mentions that other coaches have urged McInnis to address concerns about Chung, especially following her upcoming retirement.
“I am Keith Alleyne, recently retired after 19 years as the men’s hockey coach. Several head coaches in our athletic department have asked me to express our concerns regarding the athletic director’s contract extension. The prevailing culture of fear in our department is stifling honest feedback,” the letter starts.
Alleyne criticized Chung, labeling her as the “worst leader” he has encountered and accusing her of focusing on “silencing dissent.”
He expressed his deep commitment to Yale and its Athletic Association, emphasizing the negative impact of Chung’s leadership. “Her self-centeredness and dishonest approach have created a hostile atmosphere, aided by a group of administrators intent on suppressing any opposition,” he claimed.
Alleyne further offered to provide additional details if McInnis wanted to understand the consequences of Chung’s leadership on his program, noting his own positive track record compared to Chung’s less favorable statistics. “While I take responsibility for my record, it’s clear that leadership—or the lack thereof—plays a significant role in any organization,” he added.
Officials shared the letter with media outlets, confirming that Alleyne sent it shortly after he retired. He declined to comment further afterward.
Yale’s Office of the President and the Department of Athletics have been contacted for their responses to these claims.
Alleyne, who played for Yale from 1976 to 1980, took over as head coach in 2006, guiding the team to NCAA championships in 2013 and 2017. He concluded his role with an overall record of 282 wins, 254 losses, and 54 ties.
Chung, who previously coached volleyball at Colgate University, became Yale’s Athletic Director in 2018 after serving in a similar role at Colgate for six years.
