eagle pass, texas — The Biden-Harris border crisis and Texas efforts to reduce the number of people crossing the border illegally have led to dramatic changes in Shelby Park. From shipping containers to razor wire and chain-link fencing, the park along the Rio Grande resembles a fortified military base.
December 18th was the United Nations International Day of Migration. In southern Mexico, migrants told Blaze Media they were trying to reach the United States that day because of rumors that the border would be open. After all, there hasn't been a huge population increase in the area, but officers said last Wednesday was busier than in weeks past.
Although the number of people entering the U.S. illegally is down compared to this time last year, illegal immigrants are still making their final attempt to enter the United States with President-elect Donald Trump less than a month away from taking office. What has been going on since the Texas National Guard took over Shelby Park, and what is largely preventing Border Patrol from entering the park since it is under state control, is a cat-and-mouse game of illegal border crossers.
The group drove straight toward a white and green pickup and turned themselves in to be processed.
If Texas state troopers caught a suspected illegal immigrant on private land, they would arrest him for trespassing instead of turning him over to Border Patrol. When the National Guard encounters them, the soldiers won't open the gates to let them in, and in some cases, they'll even repel them with pepper balls if they're too rowdy. As if to underline how ridiculous the border crisis has become, illegal immigrants are actively seeking out Border Patrol agents and running to them so they can be processed and released into the United States.
Blaze Media witnessed the “game” in real time with Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission officials. FWC was sent to Texas by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) in support of Texas Governor Greg Abbott's (R) Operation Lone Star initiative. Blaze News was driving alongside the temporary but fortified fence with the FWC when it drove through a hole in the first fence at the border and then a second fence topped with concertina wire. They found a group of 20 illegal immigrants trying to climb the mountain. When the last few people realized that the group was not Border Patrol, they jumped over the fence.
Once everyone was through, they ran towards the next road. There, a Border Patrol pickup truck was rushing to pick them up to prevent them from attempting to “escape.” It wasn't. The group drove straight toward a white and green pickup and turned themselves in to be processed.
Catch-and-release practices, along with the CBP One app that has allowed would-be illegal border crossers to enter the country through ports of entry, are expected to end on Trump's first day in office. This shell game is a cover for the Biden-Harris administration to claim that border numbers are decreasing.
It remains to be seen what will happen in Mexico if the migrants heading north fail to reach the border by January 20th. Mexican migrants say they are determined to reach the U.S.-Mexico border, even if just in case. If Trump arrived after he officially became president.
