Trump Administration Raises Concerns Over Tylenol Use During Pregnancy

President Donald Trump recently shared a video featuring a pregnant woman who, faced with warnings about Tylenol’s use during pregnancy, defiantly continued to take the medication. This has sparked a heated discussion online.

In a press briefing, Trump claimed that acetaminophen, the active ingredient in Tylenol, could be associated with various developmental issues in children. He referenced research from the Sinai Mountain study, backed by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and other health agencies.

The president cautioned expectant mothers to avoid acetaminophen, except in cases of high fever. This warning comes on the heels of a comprehensive review conducted by HHS, the FDA, and the NIH, which evaluated past studies on the drug.

The announcement has provoked backlash among pregnant women who have long regarded acetaminophen as the only over-the-counter pain reliever deemed safe during pregnancy. Other pain medications, including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and opioids, are known to have links to serious risks like congenital disabilities and miscarriage.

A pregnant woman, responding to the warnings, shared a video of herself taking Tylenol. In a TikTok post, a user named Natalie voiced her skepticism regarding the medical advice coming from men, suggesting it was uninformed.

“Due to no medical advice from men who do not have a science, medical, or medical degree… yeah, I trust doctors with degrees,” she expressed.

In another video, a different expectant mother filmed herself consuming Tylenol, commenting, “I’m popping Tylenol while pregnant, and am I trying to do it on the government?”

One individual added online, “Pregnant liberals are taking Tylenol to try to give babies autism, just to protest President Trump.”

Dr. Nicole Saphier cautioned against the casual use of Tylenol during pregnancy, urging that if it’s necessary, it should only be taken in minimal amounts. She emphasized not to politicize pregnancy.

Notably, the Tylenol brand has reiterated its recommendations regarding medication during pregnancy. An older warning from 2017 resurfaced, stating, “I don’t actually recommend using the product while pregnant.”

HHS even chose to share this older warning on social media, alongside an image of Trump captioned, “Trump is right about everything.”

When questioned about the earlier post, a spokesperson for Kemb, the parent company of Tylenol, clarified that the message was misinterpreted. They stressed that any medication taken by pregnant women should first be discussed with healthcare providers.

  • “Acetaminophen is the safest painkiller option for pregnant women, but only when necessary throughout the pregnancy,” the spokesperson stated.
  • “Our products are safe and effective when used according to the instructions on the label.”
  • “We advise pregnant women against taking over-the-counter medications with acetaminophen without consulting a doctor first.”
