The long-awaited payments from the $725 million Facebook settlement have finally been distributed to millions of eligible users.
Distributions commenced in August 2025 and will continue over the next ten weeks, managed by a designated company.
This saga started a few years back when Meta, Facebook’s parent company, agreed to pay the hefty sum due to issues surrounding user data sharing with third parties. One prominent third party was Cambridge Analytica, a consulting firm that played a significant role in Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign.
The settlement attracted significant media attention when it received final approval in 2023, largely because of its unprecedented size. Essentially, anyone who had a Facebook account in the U.S. between 2007 and 2022 qualified for a share of this substantial amount.
At the time the approval came through, Angeion was still verifying about 28 million claims, identifying which ones were legitimate and discarding fraudulent or duplicate submissions.
Leslie Weaver, co-lead advisor to the plaintiffs, mentioned in court that this could be the largest claim ever filed in a U.S. class action lawsuit.
By late 2023, Angeion confirmed that at least 17 million of those 28 million claims had been verified. This indicates that those 17 million individuals should start receiving payments soon.
However, because so many people are eligible, the individual payments are expected to be on the smaller side. The amount may vary depending on how long someone had an active account, with estimates suggesting that the median payment could be around $30.
If you filed a claim by the August 2023 deadline and it’s been approved, you’ll receive your payment via the method you selected when filing. This could be through a direct deposit, a prepaid card sent by mail, or a PayPal transaction.
Nexstar reached out to Angeion seeking specifics on the number of people who ultimately qualified for payments, when these payments would start, and how much larger individual payments might be, but there was no response.
It’s worth noting that it took nearly two years after the settlement was approved to begin issuing payments, with multiple appeals causing delays. Both of those appeals were resolved by May 2025.
