Tragic Incident Involving Diver in Indonesia
A 30-year-old Chinese woman tragically passed away while attempting to retrieve a camera that had fallen into the sea during a dive in Indonesia. Zhang Xiaohan, who was qualified and experienced in scuba diving, was exploring near Kakaban Island in East Kalimantan when the incident took place.
According to reports, Xiaohan was part of a group of 12 guests accompanied by three guides. On May 3, she was found deceased at a depth of 87 meters at Kerapa Dua dive site. Initially, she had been diving to enjoy the vibrant coral reefs and marine life, but her GoPro slipped from her grasp as she was about eight meters from the surface. Despite warnings from her guide, she chose to go back down for the camera.
When Xiaohan failed to resurface, the guide attempted to locate her but was unsuccessful. After waiting for a brief period, they reported her missing. Subsequently, rescue teams, including local marine agencies and soldiers, were mobilized to search the waters surrounding Kakaban Island. Sadly, her body was located 88 meters deep on May 3, near a popular diving route.
The local authorities are investigating, with initial beliefs suggesting that a powerful undercurrent may have contributed to her drowning. Following her death, there has been a wave of sorrow and discussions on social media in China. Many noted that despite her qualifications, it’s common for experienced divers to sometimes underestimate nature’s forces.
One observer remarked on social media that it’s essential to prioritize safety over equipment, emphasizing that no camera is worth risking one’s life. The tragedy has resonated deeply with Xiaohan’s family in Z Jiang Province, who are understandably grieving.
As conversations unfold, numerous users stressed the importance of having company while diving, reiterating a crucial tip: “Always dive with a buddy.”
