Tragedy Strikes Boston Fire Department
A Boston firefighter, who also served in the Marine Corps, has tragically died while combatting a substantial house fire in Dorchester, city officials confirmed on Sunday.
Firefighter Robert “Bobby” Kilduff Jr. had a long-standing career with the Boston Fire Department, dedicating 24 years to the service as a member of Rescue 2. He lost his life Saturday night while responding to a fire on Treadway Road.
“Our hearts are heavy for the family of Robert T. Kilduff, who, unfortunately, passed away,” read a statement from the Boston Fire Department shared through social media.
Mayor Michelle Wu honored Kilduff, referring to him as a hero, noting that thanks to the prompt actions of the firefighting team, all residents managed to escape the flames unharmed.
“Boston has lost a hero,” Wu remarked. “Firefighter Robert Kilduff Jr. hails from a family of firefighters and considered this duty the pinnacle of service and protection. His courageous efforts, along with those of his team, ensured that all residents got out safely.”
She extended condolences to Kilduff’s family and acknowledged the immense contributions his family has made to the city and the country. “Boston will always hold deep gratitude for Firefighters Kilduff and their unwavering dedication.”
Fire Chief Rodney Marshall remembered Kilduff, affectionately called “BK,” as someone who resonated with respect within the fire department community. Marshall described him as a person whose courage and commitment epitomized the firefighting profession.
Reports indicate that Kilduff, aged 53, suffered severe injuries after falling from the third floor of the burning structure while firefighting teams worked to extinguish the blaze. Despite the quick response from firefighters and paramedics, he later succumbed to his injuries.
Interestingly, earlier that very day, Kilduff had been involved in a technical rescue operation, showcasing his dedication to service prior to the tragic incident.
In remembrance of Kilduff, Governor Maura Healey ordered flags at state buildings across Massachusetts to be flown at half-staff. She expressed her sorrow on social media, acknowledging Kilduff’s lifelong commitment to protecting others. “His bravery has saved many lives, including those of five residents from the fire.”
As of now, the fire has been contained but it caused significant damage, affecting all three floors of the home and ultimately leading to the roof’s collapse. The exact cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
