After more than 40 years working as a meteorologist, a seasoned professional in Indiana was unexpectedly let go by his Nexstar-owned television station. This decision came just months after reports had labeled his close ties with a younger colleague as “creepy.”
Jesse Walker was set to leave WTWO in Terre Haute on October 2 to start his own weather venture alongside former colleague Alex Kerkhove, as noted by industry source FTVLive.
However, the station hastened Walker’s departure, informing him that he had already completed his final day, which meant he didn’t get the chance to say goodbye on air, according to FTVLive.
In a supportive social media post, Kerkhove expressed her disappointment about how Walker was treated. She began by apologizing for the lack of regard shown to someone who had dedicated his career to serving the community.
She highlighted his commitment to local schools, severe weather coverage, and community events, mentioning that he taught her “to just be yourself.” Kerkhove referred to him as her “station dad,” someone who had always looked out for her.
Her message ended with a pointed remark about the station, noting, “Sorry leaving wasn’t on your terms, but your legacy as the chief meteorologist is something they can never take away.”
This sudden departure adds to the ongoing saga surrounding Walker and Kerkhove, whose close-knit relationship created some tension at WTWO, as reported by FTVLive.
Kerkhove, a newcomer who joined the station after college, reportedly left earlier this year, claiming she was fired while Nexstar insisted she was not terminated.
Insiders indicated that Walker had shown a “deep interest” in Kerkhove before she was employed at WTWO, and they interacted frequently even then.
Once she started at the station, sources alleged that there was a strong bond between them. One insider noted that Kerkhove was often seen with Walker even after her shifts had ended, describing the connection as somewhat inappropriate given their age difference.
Another insider remarked, “I can’t say for sure if there was a romantic aspect, but it felt very creepy.”
Although FTVLive maintained uncertainty about their relationship, it was clear that some staff felt it crossed a professional line.
Both Kerkhove and Walker insisted that their bond was based on mentorship and friendship. Kerkhove claimed management had attempted to restrict her communication with Walker, stating she could only talk to him briefly while at work due to security monitoring.
Walker passionately defended Kerkhove after her exit, calling her one of the best meteorologists he had ever worked with and suggesting that the situation influenced his decision about his future at the station.
Later on, Walker expressed plans to move on from WTWO, announcing his intent to open a new weather company with Kerkhove as his partner.
A spokesperson for Nexstar explained that Walker had requested to be released from his contract, and WTWO agreed to this. They did acknowledge celebrating his contributions to the community and shared a tribute video prior to his departure.
The spokesperson also clarified that WTWO did not terminate Kerkhove’s employment and noted attempts to have her return, which she declined. They added that further comments on the matter would not be made due to its personnel nature.
