Recently released surveillance footage in the investigation of the Brown University shooting shows a stocky figure, wearing a mask, whose walking style shifts from calm to a much more erratic gait. Body language experts interpret this kind of behavior as indicative of someone potentially acting with malicious intent. Susan Constantine, a certified threat assessment trainer, commented, “The way he’s looking around and moving with his hands behind his back suggests he’s more focused on monitoring his surroundings than simply passing through.”
In fact, early footage captured prior to the incident indicated the individual seemed, well, intent on a particular destination. “It looks like he’s timing his route or assessing the locations of surveillance cameras,” she explained, revealing a sort of strategic planning on his part.

As the investigation continues, it became apparent that the suspect’s behavior changed noticeably. Such “very significant markers,” as described by Constantine, came to light particularly when he crossed a street: he sped up, waddled somewhat, and concealed his right hand in his pocket—though it’s unclear if he was hiding a weapon. She noted, “The way he held his leg also exhibited some unusual traits.”
Brown University remains vulnerable, according to crime experts
In Providence, Rhode Island, law enforcement has released several clips and images in hopes of identifying this person of interest, who has been evading capture for over 72 hours since Saturday’s shooting event.
According to Constantine, the suspect displayed characteristics such as a stocky build, hyper-awareness of his surroundings, and distinctive gait that could help investigators recognize him moving forward. “Watch for the position of his foot or how he’s swinging his arms,” she advised. There was a distinct arch in his foot and outward-pointing toes—perhaps he’s right-handed too, given his body movements.
Investigation developments expected to evolve
Sadly, two students, Ella Cook from Alabama and Muhammad Aziz Umurzokov from Virginia, lost their lives in the attack, with nine others injured. This tragic outcome only underscores the urgency of identifying the suspect.
Later updates revealed that a 9mm shell casing was found at the scene. New footage shows the suspect near police officers soon after the incident, which further complicates initial impressions of him. Constantine remarked that in clearer images, the person doesn’t appear as stocky as earlier clips suggested, particularly while moving near a picket fence. “It looks like he’s concealing something beneath his jacket,” she commented, indicating that appearances can indeed be misleading.
With the suspect still at large, anyone with tips is encouraged to contact Providence Police or the FBI online.
