Experts explain how a Ryanair flight passenger came close to being pulled out of a window

Ryanair Flight Incident: Window Breaks Shortly After Takeoff

Experts recently discussed a frightening incident involving a Ryanair flight that took off from Thessaloniki, Greece, where a passenger window cracked and broke just after departure, nearly leading to passengers being sucked out of the plane.

In light of this alarming event, aviation specialists are urging travelers to heed safety instructions carefully. Steve Arroyo, an aviation safety expert and former airline captain, highlighted the importance of always fastening seat belts while seated, even if it feels redundant. “Just follow the crew’s instructions,” he advised.

According to Richard J. Levy, also an aviation consultant and former captain, the cabin’s depressurization happened after a part of the engine broke and struck a window. This incident caused significant pressure differences, creating a dangerous suction force.

“Then the person was sucked out,” he explained. Arroyo mentioned that rapid decompression in commercial aviation is extremely uncommon, emphasizing that flying remains one of the safest modes of transportation nowadays. In fact, he pointed out that in 2023, over 4.4 billion passengers flew globally without any recorded accidents.

Nonetheless, William J. McGee, a senior aviation fellow, commented that incidents like these might be “not as uncommon as most passengers think.” He attributed it to what he perceives as weak government oversight in aviation safety that has deteriorated over the years.

As for the passenger involved, a 61-year-old Serbian man named Ljubisa Karovic, he suffered neck and shoulder injuries as well as friction burns. His wife, Svetlana Grkovic, shared her harrowing experience, explaining that in a panic, she instinctively grabbed onto his leg, thinking, “If I’m going to die, I’m going to die with you.”

Grkovic recounted the chaotic scene within the cabin as they struggled to pull her husband back inside, noting that they even tried to use a suitcase to block the window, which ultimately got sucked out during the episode. “The oxygen mask fell off, and chaos ensued,” she described, conveying the sheer panic in those moments.

A Ryanair spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating that the flight successfully returned to Thessaloniki where medical assistance was administered on the ground. An alternative plane was arranged to take passengers to their destination, minimizing delays. One passenger received medical attention after landing.
