Expiration of ACA premium subsidies raises worries for Iowans

Impact of ACA Premium Subsidy Expiration on Ogden Residents

The upcoming expiration of the Affordable Care Act’s premium subsidies on December 31st is set to cause substantial premium increases for many Americans, including those living in Ogden, as lawmakers head into the holiday season.

“I’m really upset about this,” said local resident Sarah Boelke. “It’s so frustrating that we’re in this position when it seems like such an easy issue to solve. There feels like there’s this grudge against the ACA, you know?”

Recently, Boelke found out from her insurance provider that her monthly premium would leap from $328 to $1,600. She pointed her finger at Congress for making this situation worse. “I feel like we’re being held hostage here. It’s like they’re using this whole situation as a political tool for their own agendas, and it just doesn’t seem fair. Too many people are at risk because of this,” she expressed.

Janice Van Ahn, a health insurance advisor in Des Moines, noted a rising sense of anxiety among her clients. “It’s becoming more common for people to feel anxious about this,” she remarked. Van Ahn, who is trying to assist her clients through these premium hikes, likened their predicament to “people leaning on two legs of a chair.”

Boelke has taken it upon herself to contact Iowa’s congressional representatives, urging them to act on this pressing issue. “The way they choose to act—or not act—really shapes how we vote. I know they’re aware of that, but it’s crucial that they hear from us, too. That’s why I decided to reach out, even to KCCI, to elevate the people’s voices,” she noted.

Meanwhile, discussions in Washington are ongoing as lawmakers strive to maintain the affordability of the Affordable Care Act.
