Explanation of the Ending of 'Little House on the Prairie': Is a Second Season Coming?

Little House on the Prairie Season 1 Recap

The first season of Netflix’s adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s book, *Little House on the Prairie*, follows young Laura (Alice Halsey) and her family as they leave their cozy home in the woods for a fresh start in Independence, Kansas. Throughout their journey, the Ingalls family faces perilous rivers, works on constructing log cabins, and navigates a series of hurdles in pursuit of their version of the American dream.

Upon arriving in Independence, Charles (Luke Bracey) quickly realizes the “free land” is anything but. The settlers are occupying Osage land illegally. The fear lingers that, if the town attracts the attention of railroads, the U.S. government will intervene and offer significant compensation to the Native settlers. This tension hangs over the Ingalls family and their friends for much of the season.

In time, an agreement is reached, and the Osage family departs, but this doesn’t guarantee the Ingalls family can stay. At the season finale, Charles learns he must purchase the land from the government. Unfortunately, they find themselves deep in debt. A defaulting mortgage from tenants in Minnesota and a devastating prairie fire destroy their year’s hard work in planting crops.

So the question now is: will Laura and her family remain in Independence? Or are they destined to load up their wagons in search of new opportunities? Here’s a summary of the season’s conclusion.

*Little House on the Prairie* Ending: What Lies Ahead for the Ingalls Family?

Ultimately, the Ingalls family leaves their little house behind, just as Laura Ingalls Wilder’s original tale describes. They are compelled to pack their covered wagon once again, setting off from the home they established.

In conversations with *DECIDER*, stars Luke Bracey and Crosby Fitzgerald shared that filming the farewell scenes was emotionally impactful, mirroring their characters’ experiences.

Fitzgerald asked, “Do you remember that day?”

“It was wild,” Bracey replied.

Fitzgerald recalled, “I remember leaving home. We were rehearsing, and I wasn’t even dressed. I just went in and cried the entire time. I didn’t expect to feel that way.” He mentioned it felt like a meta moment—saying goodbye to a beloved set that had meant so much to them both personally and professionally.

Bracey noted, “We spent numerous hours in that house on set; it was a refuge for us between takes. Our little house in the middle of nowhere.”

“It was really well constructed,” Fitzgerald added.

“Totally authentic—just like a real log cabin,” Bracey said. “I was sad to say goodbye, and I remember that scene in the wagon. The light was perfect; it was a once-in-a-lifetime shot.”

As the family departs their small dwelling, does this signify the end of *Little House on the Prairie* on Netflix? At the season’s close, family friend Mr. Edwards (Warren Christie) joins the Ingalls in their wagon, suggesting they head to Walnut Grove, Minnesota, where his sister runs the Olson General Store.

Upcoming Season: What’s On the Horizon for *Little House on the Prairie*?

Yes, a second season is already in the works on Netflix. Season 2 is being produced, adapting the events from the next book in Laura Ingalls Wilder’s series, *On the Banks of Plum Creek*. Upon reaching Walnut Grove, the Ingalls family will meet new characters like Nellie Olson (Willa Dunn), Eva Beadle (Rachel Lefebvre), and Margaret Olson (Charlotte Sullivan).

When asked to tease what’s ahead, Fitzgerald humorously offered, “Listen, maybe there’s a cow and hooves on the roof. That’s all I can say.”

*Little House on the Prairie* Season 1 is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
