FA Requires Women Who Identify as Men to State, 'Biologically Female'

Changes in FA Rules for Transgender Athletes

The Football Association (FA) in Britain has updated its policies regarding transgender athletes, specifically requiring transgender men to identify as “biologically female.” This adjustment comes in the wake of a ruling by the UK Supreme Court that determined the definition of women based solely on biological sex.

As of June 1st, transgender women remain barred from competing in women’s soccer tournaments under FA regulations. However, trans men are still permitted to participate in men’s competitions. Interestingly, those wishing to join male teams must now submit a declaration acknowledging their transgender status and the associated higher risk of injuries they face compared to other players.

For the upcoming 2024-2026 season, all individuals identifying as men, including non-binary people who wish to compete in male events, must confirm their status in a statement that includes, “I am a male or non-binary biological female.” Additionally, they will have to accept that there are “physiological and performance differences” between biologically male and female athletes.

Concerns have been expressed regarding the safety of biological females when competing against biological males, with the FA emphasizing this potential risk. The testosterone levels for participating players should align with what’s considered normal for adult males.

The FA is responding to not just regulations but also to the implications of the Supreme Court ruling, which has contributed to policy shifts. An earlier policy prior to the court’s decision had suggested that players recognize a potential increase in injuries when competing alongside “stronger and faster” individuals from the opposing biological group.

This new directive hasn’t been well received by some transgender athletes. One individual expressed frustration, stating, “I’m not a biological woman; I’m a male.” They voiced doubt about many trans men consenting to the language of the declarations required for participation.
