According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), a Piper PA-32 plane crashed near Jackson, Ohio, around 12:25 p.m. local time on Saturday.

The plane crashed in a field about 400 meters from James A. Rhodes Airport.

The three victims of the crash were a father, son and family friend who were traveling to Florida over the weekend to retrieve recently purchased cars when their small plane crashed in southeastern Ohio shortly after takeoff, authorities said. That’s what it means.

The crash claimed the lives of three victims, identified as Daniel Baker, 44, Zebulon Logan, 45, and Dan Baker, 75, according to the State Highway Patrol. They were the only passengers.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department said Baker, the pilot, and his father were traveling with Logan to Florida to retrieve a car he had purchased when the plane crashed on Saturday. Authorities reported finding the pilot’s vehicle parked at the airport.

The FAA and NTSB are investigating. The FAA said in a statement that the NTSB will oversee the investigation and provide updates.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., a Piper PA-32 Cherokee Six aircraft was seen firing shots just off the road. The sheriff’s office said rescue workers searched the interior to see if there were any occupants and found all three victims dead. The Jackson Fire Department worked to extinguish the fire.

Additionally, the State Highway Patrol will work with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board to investigate the cause of the incident. The Jackson County Coroner turned over the victim’s body to the Montgomery County Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy.

The committee said the investigation focused on three areas: the pilot, the aircraft and the operating environment.
