Film “Sara’s Oil” Makes Waves at the Box Office
A new faith-based film has made a notable entrance into the box office, landing in the top five last weekend. It achieved a perfect CinemaScore, receiving a warm reception from audiences.
Sara’s Oil (PG) came in fifth place, generating an estimated $4,458,000. It trailed behind hits like Predator: Badlands ($40 million), It’s a Shame ($7.1 million), and Black Phone 2 ($5.3 million). Notably, among the five newcomers, Sara’s Oil took the top spot.
Moviegoers were particularly favorable, awarding the film a rare A+ CinemaScore, making it the only new release to achieve this distinct rating. In contrast, Predator: Badlands received an A-.
The film draws inspiration from real-life events, chronicling the story of an 11-year-old African American girl who faces challenges when oil is discovered on her ancestral land. Sarah Rector, the protagonist, inherited this land due to her ancestors having been enslaved by the Creek Nation.
Critics have also given positive reviews. Variety’s Joe Leydon highlighted the performances of Naya Desir Johnson and Zachary Levi, referring to the film as “irresistibly uplifting.”
“The period details, storytelling, and overall experience are both comforting and engaging,” Leydon noted. He speculated that word of mouth might help Sara’s Oil appeal to a broader audience beyond its usual faith-based demographic.
Avi Offer from NYCMovieGuru described the film as “charming, tender, well-acted, and beautifully shot.”
Sara’s Oil is produced by the Kingdom Story Company, known for films like Jesus Revolution and I Can Only Imagine, along with Wonder Project.
Director John Shepard, who has worked on films like Bella, mentioned that the film emphasizes “the importance of faith, family, and community.”
“I love stories about underdogs facing significant adversity,” he said. “This is about a little girl who refuses to be held back. She viewed her talent as a divine gift meant for a purpose.”
Interestingly, Rector is recognized as one of America’s first black billionaires.
