Trade Talks for Kyle Pitts Heat Up
The Atlanta Falcons might be considering a trade involving Kyle Pitts, especially after his recent performance has boosted his value.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the veteran tight end is on the market and could be moved during the NFL Draft this Thursday. This shift could help the Falcons acquire additional picks.
This month, Pitts signed a one-year franchise tag worth $15.05 million, indicating the Falcons are looking to secure him for at least another season.
“I’m curious to see whether they can find a deal for Kyle Pitts,” Schefter mentioned. “They’ve got picks 48, 79, and 122, but they’re lacking overall. New general manager Ian Cunningham is eager to gather more picks for this draft as it’s crucial for him.”
The Falcons traded away their first-round pick last year, which makes this draft particularly significant for the team as they navigate their new structure under Cunningham and coach Kevin Stefanski.
The incoming regime doesn’t have strong ties to the players selected by previous management, and it seems they may capitalize on Pitts’ current high after a less-than-stellar trajectory since being drafted.
At just 25, Pitts had an impressive rookie season in 2021, recording 68 catches, one touchdown, and over 1,000 receiving yards. However, his subsequent seasons saw drops in production, with yardage totals of 356, 667, and 602. Last year, he did manage to rebound, achieving a career-high 88 receptions for 928 yards and five touchdowns.
This offseason, the Falcons placed the franchise tag on him, potentially setting the stage for a long-term deal.
However, Cunningham did indicate earlier in the offseason that he might be open to offers for Pitts. “As the general manager, my priority is the organization’s best interest,” he explained. “Kyle is an exceptional player, and it’s my responsibility to evaluate all options.”
This year’s tight end class doesn’t boast a lot of talent, which might make Pitts an appealing choice for a trade partner.
Oregon’s Kenyon Sadik is expected to be a top first-round pick, while Vanderbilt’s Eli Stowers holds potential as a candidate for the late first round.
A critical factor in any potential deal will be whether the Falcons feel confident they could extend Pitts’ contract, as giving up valuable draft capital for a one-year rental might not be wise.
