Tua Tagovailoa’s Return to South Florida: An Unhappy Reunion

When Tua Tagovailoa came back to South Florida as an Atlanta Falcon to face his former teammates from the Miami Dolphins, it wasn’t exactly a joyous occasion.

In fact, “dysfunctional” might be a more accurate description.

During six seasons, both Tagovailoa and the Dolphins struggled to find success together. Unfortunately, they failed to achieve what they had hoped for.

Throughout his time with Miami, Tagovailoa faced setbacks from coaching staff and injuries, which kept him from becoming what they envisioned as the franchise’s central figure.

The Dolphins, on their end, never came close to achieving the championship aspirations they had when they selected him in the top five of the 2020 draft and subsequently compensated him as a top-tier quarterback in 2024.

After the failures piled up, there was a parting of ways during the offseason, making this exhibition game at Hard Rock Stadium the first time they were in the same place since the split.

And, interestingly enough, everyone seems to think they’re better off now that they’ve separated.

But are they really better off at this moment?

That’s debatable.

As Tagovailoa aims to secure a starting role with the Falcons, the fact he entered this game without having done so yet raises questions about his progress since training camp began.

This is particularly telling because he was essentially competing only against himself, while Michael Penix Jr. has had limited practice time as he recovers from knee surgery.

Curiously, despite having minimal competition and a clear path to becoming the starter, Tagovailoa has been unable to secure the job.

The Dolphins decided to part ways with him this offseason, even knowing it would come with a hefty cost of around $55 million in salary just for 2026, with more expenses looming for the following year.

In fact, the Dolphins were so keen to move on that they essentially paid Tagovailoa to leave.

What does this mean for the Dolphins? The move came as part of a broader strategy to divest from talent to “solve the salary cap problem” left by the previous administration.

Now, the Dolphins seem to be one of the least talented teams in the league, gearing up for yet another rebuilding season—perhaps the 1,387th in the last decade.

So here we were, team rebuilding facing off against a quarterback who’s been labeled as not good enough.

The atmosphere was somewhat lackluster in front of the crowd at Hard Rock Stadium, which mustered enough enthusiasm to boo the quarterback they once thought would lead them to victory.

It was a fittingly somber scene.

In terms of performance, Tagovailoa played decently, completing 7 out of 8 passes. Still, it didn’t feel substantial.

The Dolphins fielded their backup players against a defense that’s lacking talent and depth, and the game reflected that inadequacy.

The competition between a quarterback who struggles and backups who are also underwhelming was—well, disappointing.

RESULTS AND REFLECTIONS ON TAGOVAILOA’S PERFORMANCE

Tagovailoa did complete 3 of 4 passes on his initial drive, with the only incompletion being a throwaway; that drive ended in a touchdown.

However, it’s worth noting that the impressive-seeming 43-yard completion to Kyle Pitts was more about a short pitch transformed into a long gain against a disorganized defense.

On his next drive, Tagovailoa fumbled a snap, leading to a recovery by the Dolphins. Another drive later, running back Brian Robinson also fumbled, again recovered by Miami’s defense.

So, while credit goes to the Miami defense, which will face tougher challenges once the regular season begins, Tagovailoa still hasn’t managed to secure the Falcons’ starting QB position, especially now that Penix Jr. has been cleared for full practice.

Good on them, I suppose.

But really, not that great.
