Cape Verde World Cup Goalie Vozinha Reflects on Fame

Cape Verde’s goalkeeper Vozinha is sharing his thoughts on the recent changes in his life due to newfound fame.

At 40 years old, Vozinha rose to prominence after a remarkable performance in Cape Verde’s first-ever match at the World Cup, where they held the reigning champions, Spain, to a 0-0 draw. This achievement made Cape Verde the second smallest nation by population to qualify for the tournament. In that match, Vozinha made seven impressive saves, quickly becoming a well-known name among soccer fans.

But with fame comes challenges.

“I’ve lost my peace and tranquility. My privacy has diminished significantly,” he shared in an interview.

“Nowadays, when I go out to eat or just step out, someone is always wanting to take a picture or ask for my autograph. Sometimes, people even film me,” Vozinha mentioned, noting how much his life has changed and expressing uncertainty about how to manage it.

The fame has begun affecting his family life too.

He noted that fans frequently gather outside his mother’s home in Cape Verde, which has been tough on his parents. “I’m not there to help them navigate this. They’ll have to find ways to handle the situation and set boundaries,” he said.

Since that initial match in June, Vozinha has experienced a meteoric rise in online popularity.

He saw his Instagram followers explode from 50,000 to about 28.4 million.

Adding to his accolades, Vozinha is now on the shortlist for the men’s goalkeeper of the year at the prestigious Ballon d’Or.

However, he longs for the simplicity of his previous life. “Many people aspire to fame and a public image but often overlook the downsides. Honestly, if given the choice between my life now and the one I had before, I’d pick the life I had before,” he concluded.
