Tragic Loss of Two Teens in Georgia
Two teenagers from Waycross, Georgia, are believed to have been struck and killed by lightning on July 10 during a fishing trip.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is looking into their deaths as family and friends mourn the loss of these young men.
According to relatives, 18-year-old Joey Nelson Jr. and 19-year-old Randall Martin III were found unresponsive, prompting a call to GBI officials who investigated the area near Alton Circle. Authorities suspect that a thunderstorm may have contributed to the tragedy.
“The teens were reportedly heading back to their car when lightning struck. Investigators noted that both the bodies and the car appeared to have been damaged by lightning,” a report mentioned.
In a statement following the incident, the Mayor of Waycross, Dr. Michael Angelo James, expressed sorrow over the deaths. He said, “We are saddened by the tragic loss of Joey Nelson and Randall Martin III, who were struck by lightning after a summer storm on July 10, 2025.”
The mayor went on to highlight their contributions to the community. “Joey Nelson was a graduate of the Wear County High School class of 2024, while Randall Martin III was part of the 2025 class. Both were cherished members of the Wear County Gators Football Team, and their spirit and dedication left a lasting impact on everyone in Waycross. Joey was also the grandfather of our city clerk, Mrs. Jacarin Powell.”
“Our condolences go out to their families during this unimaginable time. On behalf of Waycross, we extend our deepest sympathies to the families of Nelson and Martin. We share in your grief and want you to know that we are here for you. The city is collaborating with Ware County schools to facilitate memorial events.”
“Let us come together as a community to honor Joey and Randall—not only for their achievements in sports but also for the joy and inspiration they brought to those around them.”
As of Thursday, a GoFundMe to assist with Nelson’s family’s expenses has raised over $12,000, while another for Martin has gathered more than $5,000.
Recently, three people in Florida were also struck by lightning while at the beach. Following the incident at St. Augustine’s Pier, one individual was in crisis, another sustained minor injuries, and a third chose not to seek medical attention.
