Family Dispute During Thanksgiving Results in Man Setting Fire to His House

A verbal disagreement on Thanksgiving turned dangerous when an Illinois man allegedly set his house ablaze after an argument.

Lake County sheriff’s deputies arrested 21-year-old Eric J. Crump on Thursday, charging him with aggravated arson and residential arson in connection with the incident in Beach Park, a small town along Lake Michigan about 45 miles north of Chicago.

Thankfully, no one was hurt in the fire, but it seems to have stemmed from a very tense Thanksgiving at the Crump residence.

According to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office:

On November 27, 2025, around 7:30 p.m., deputies were dispatched to a home on North Lone Oak Road in Beach Park for a non-violent verbal domestic dispute. Family members were upset that Eric J. Crump had become hostile and was arguing with others. Deputies arrived and managed to calm the situation. Both Crump and the family members were involved in criminal activities, but he agreed to stay quiet for the rest of the evening.

Despite this, tensions clearly did not dissipate. A bit more than an hour later, officers returned to find the house on fire.

The sheriff’s report mentioned, “When firefighters arrived, a man resembling Crump was seen standing a block away, armed with a knife.”

Reports indicate that Crump then ran away. Officers sent a dog team to track him, but his scent led them to the road, suggesting he may have gotten into a vehicle.

Eventually, deputies located Crump at a storage facility and took him into custody. The investigation revealed:

Crump had received a call from family members concerning being kicked out after the earlier argument. He left but returned shortly and went to a bedroom near the garage before leaving again. Soon after, the family noticed smoke filling the house and evacuated. Detectives determined that Crump had used an accelerant to ignite the room before escaping.

Sheriff John D. Idleburg noted the irony that this violent incident occurred during a day typically meant for Thanksgiving “blessings.”

“We’re fortunate that no one was hurt or killed in this senseless act,” he remarked. “While families in Lake County were celebrating, our dispatchers were busy, and deputies were responding.”
