Charges Filed After Fireworks Incident Claims Young Girl’s Life
A man from California has been charged almost a year after a tragic fireworks explosion resulted in the death of an 8-year-old girl, Jasmine Nguyen, during a Fourth of July celebration in Buena Park.
Earl DeCastro, aged 47, was charged with manslaughter on Wednesday. Prosecutors allege that his fireworks display malfunctioned, leading to the fatal incident.
On that day, Jasmine, alongside her mother and 7-year-old sister, was watching from DeCastro’s driveway as he set off fireworks in the street. They spent over an hour enjoying the festivities before a significant accident occurred.
The grand finale included an illegal “$400 cake” of professional-grade explosives, which required a permit to use and purchase. Unfortunately, it malfunctioned, sending a mortar directly into the driveway and sending attendees scrambling for safety inside DeCastro’s home.
“It all happened so quickly. A fun day with friends turned into a nightmare,” recalled Haley Nguyen, Jasmine’s mother, while reflecting on the incident in a recent interview. “Some people were bleeding from their shoes.”
Tragically, Jasmine was sitting next to a table where another firework ignited, causing severe injuries before she could reach safety inside the house. Rushed to UC Irvine Medical Center, she unfortunately succumbed to her injuries.
“I didn’t expect her to be gone,” Haley said, expressing her heartbreak. “I sat there for months, unable to do anything.”
Despite her immense grief, the mother stated she didn’t wish to see DeCastro prosecuted, saying, “It really was an accident.” However, prosecutors took a different stance, charging him with manslaughter for recklessly causing serious injuries and possessing illegal fireworks over 100 pounds.
Details still remain unclear as to why charges took nearly a year to be filed against DeCastro. If convicted, he faces up to six years in prison.
Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer commented on the situation, emphasizing that there was nothing coincidental about the handling of illegal fireworks. “A beautiful girl who never had a chance to grow up lost her life,” he remarked, calling for accountability.
