Family’s Grief Turned to Shock After Funeral Home Mistake

A family in Detroit is devastated after discovering that a funeral home presented a different woman in their late mother’s clothing during a viewing. Tragically, this woman was mistakenly cremated before the family had the chance to say their final goodbyes.

The children of 61-year-old Kimberly Moore reported that Hutchinson Funeral Home displayed an unfamiliar woman dressed in their mother’s attire at a viewing held just a day before her scheduled burial. A local news outlet revealed that this shocking event unfolded in a deeply emotional atmosphere.

Bianca Robinson, one of Moore’s daughters, recalled her disbelief as she told a mortuary staff member that the woman “is not my momma.” This moment was particularly jarring for her.

When Robinson arrived to prepare her mother for the service—applying nails and eyelashes—a mortuary employee reportedly asked her if this woman was her mother. Surprise filled Robinson, who couldn’t believe the staff didn’t recognize her own mother.

Another family member expressed frustration, saying, “The woman had on my momma’s dress, wig, everything,” but insisted, “that’s not my momma in the casket.” They were confused and saddened as they looked at the wrong body.

According to Robinson, the staff member later admitted, “I’m so sorry…your mom must have been cremated when she first got here.” Allegedly, the employee explained that two women had been brought in at the same time, leading to the mix-up.

In disbelief, Robinson questioned the funeral home’s procedures, wondering how such an error could happen. Her family, including relative Christopher Moore, shared that the funeral home suggested that a wet toe tag might have caused the confusion with identification.

In response to the family’s concerns, Hutchinson Funeral Home issued a statement expressing their sorrow for what the Moore family has undergone. They affirmed that they would conduct an internal review to ascertain how this unfortunate incident occurred, while also asking for the family’s privacy during this distressing time.

The family mentioned that Moore was set to be cremated following the funeral service, letting everyone have a final chance to see her. Now, they face the heartbreaking reality of not even having her ashes, leaving Robinson to plead, “What do we have? Somebody please tell us something.”
