Family Reunites with Cat After 10 Years
A family’s cat, Asa, who went missing a decade ago, has been found after slipping out through an open screen door.
The Montclair Township Animal Shelter in New Jersey shared on social media that a Good Samaritan brought in a stray cat recently. They immediately scanned for a microchip.
Surprisingly, the microchip linked the cat back to Sean Huberle, a resident from upstate New York, who lived in Montclair when Asa disappeared.
“Bingo. Microchip and registration complete! Family still has the same phone number,” the shelter announced.
Asa had been adopted as a kitten by Huberle. Ten years prior, he was trying to rescue the cat after she got stuck in a rain gutter. Unfortunately, his ladder broke during the attempt, causing Asa to flee.
“I found her, and when I reached out, the cat freaked out,” Huberle recounted. “The ladder came off, and the cat took off.”
Even after relocating to the Finger Lakes region of New York, the family kept searching for Asa. They put up flyers, checked shelters, and kept a close eye on their neighborhood—all the while updating Asa’s microchip information.
“We always hoped to see her somewhere,” Huberle said. “We searched everywhere but, in the end, she never showed up.”
Despite no sightings over the years, Asa remained a part of their conversations. “Just a month ago, my son and I wondered, what happened to that cat? She was a very sweet cat,” he shared.
When the shelter reached out to deliver the news, it was a moment every shelter hopes for. “We made a call that every shelter dreams of,” they posted on Facebook.
Initially skeptical, Huberle thought the call might be a scam until his wife verified the information. “I couldn’t believe it,” he recalled.
The shelter mentioned that Asa was easygoing during the body scan to confirm her identity and emphasized how crucial it is for pet owners to keep their registration updated.
Additionally, the shelter highlighted their ongoing need for donations, specifically cat food, to assist families struggling to care for their pets.
