Trial of Lindsay Clancy Raises Concerns About Mental Health

Lindsay Clancy’s family expressed significant worries regarding her mental wellbeing in the months leading up to a tragic incident where she took the lives of her three young children, as detailed in court testimonies.

At 36 years old, Clancy faces three counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of her children—Cora, Dawson, and Callan—who were all under six years old. Their bodies were discovered in their Duxbury home, and the prosecution concluded its case earlier this week.

The jury is composed of 12 women and six men, including six alternates.

During the trial, Clancy’s mother-in-law, Susan Clancy, shared her fears about Lindsay’s mental health during the 2022 holiday season. Despite her worries, she described Lindsay as a loving and caring mother.

Emotional Turmoil in Court

The trial took a dramatic turn when Lindsay reportedly experienced a breakdown. Prosecutors claim that she “deliberately and meticulously” strangled her children before attempting to end her own life, driven by overwhelming feelings of exhaustion related to motherhood.

Lindsay admits to the act of killing but asserts that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis during the incident. She has pleaded not guilty, citing insanity as her defense.

According to Susan Clancy, Lindsay was in considerable pain. “We were all very worried,” she mentioned. “She was a very caring person, a wonderful mother.” However, the decline in her mental health reportedly started around November 2022.

“She called me in November and said she wasn’t feeling well,” Susan said, recalling how her daughter-in-law struggled with insomnia, lost her appetite, and felt anxious and sad.

When asked whether she had ever witnessed Lindsay treating her children poorly, her mother-in-law responded with a firm “No.”

Lindsay’s mother, Paula Musgrove, also testified about her daughter’s struggles, sharing a text message from October 2022 in which Lindsay expressed her fear and desperation for help. In it, she wrote, “I’m really scared and I don’t want to be alone.”

Despite the turmoil, Musgrove noted that she didn’t have concerns about the children’s safety.
