Tahoe Joe’s Famous Steakhouse, a once-popular restaurant chain from California, has now dwindled down to its last two locations following another closure. Just recently, the Visalia branch abruptly shut its doors, leaving only locations in Fresno and Bakersfield still operational. This news comes after a prolonged period of decline for the franchise, as reported.
Interestingly, there was no public statement or farewell regarding this closure; it was simply indicated as closed on Tahoe Joe’s website. David Fansler, who founded the first Tahoe Joe’s in Fresno back in 1995, later sold the brand. He’s also known for starting several other eateries in the Central Valley, including Pismo’s Coastal Grill and Yosemite Ranch.
Since then, the chain has gone through several ownership changes. Fresh Acquisitions, which previously owned it and operated Old Country Buffet, declared bankruptcy in 2021. BBQ Holdings subsequently acquired the steakhouse brand in an auction, paying $5.2 million.
When BBQ Holdings made that purchase, only five Tahoe Joe’s locations were still in operation. Following the 2022 acquisition of BBQ Holdings by MTY Food Group, Tahoe Joe’s faced additional closures, with restaurants in Rocklin and Roseville shutting down. A location in San Luis Obispo had already closed prior to the 2021 sale.
Currently, Tahoe Joe’s is part of MTY’s extensive portfolio, which includes names like Baja Fresh and Cold Stone Creamery. The two remaining Tahoe Joe’s restaurants are located at 7006 N. Cedar Ave. in Fresno and 9000 Ming Ave. in Bakersfield. Notably, the original Fresno location on West Shaw Avenue had closed back in 2016.
