Pathmark Returns to Long Island with a New Concept

A familiar name in Northeast grocery shopping is making its way back to Long Island, but with a fresh approach. Pathmark, once a favorite chain that faced bankruptcy over ten years ago, is set to unveil its new store concept, Pathmark Dairy, in East Meadow this Friday.

Allegiance Retail Services, which took over Pathmark after its parent company, A&P, declared Chapter 11 in 2015, is behind this revival. The new store promises to streamline the grocery shopping experience for locals in Nassau County, focusing on quality offerings like produce, meats, seafood, and essentials for busy shoppers.

As Joseph Fantozzi, president of Allegiance Retail Services, pointed out, “Pathmark Daily meets consumers’ needs for a fast, hassle-free shopping experience with a focus on strong value and quality.” The store will also introduce private label brands, including Best Yet, and a loyalty rewards program for regular customers.

In terms of layout, the East Meadow location spans 28,000 square feet over two levels. The main shopping area is about 15,000 square feet, while extra storage is located in the basement. It’s an interesting move, bringing back a brand that many remember fondly, but, you know, with a modern twist.

Mike Said, a Staten Island resident, will be managing this new store and has plans to launch a Superfood Town in the area later this year. Super Foodtown is another brand under Allegiance Retail Services, which is a nice touch, I think.

Back in its heyday, Pathmark boasted 141 locations across New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania after being acquired by A&P for about $680 million in 2007. The history goes back even further; the company began as the Great American Tea Company in 1859 and became A&P in 1869, at one point owning several other grocery formats until its 2015 bankruptcy.

Allegiance Retail Services revived the Pathmark brand in 2019, reopening in a Brooklyn location that was once one of the original stores. This new Pathmark Dairy marks the first significant expansion of the brand since its revival, which is kind of exciting, right?
