Cleveland Fan Returns Home Run Ball to Young Girl After Controversy
During Monday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, a Cleveland Guardians fan took a home run ball from a young girl but later returned it to her mother, Nikki DeVore. This turn of events was shared in a Facebook post.
The fan, identified as Max Quinn, has since deleted his social media, which sparked additional attention online. DeVore posted a photo of her daughter beaming as she reclaimed her home run ball at Progressive Field.
In the fifth inning, a home run hit by Guardians player Daniel Schneemann landed in the stands, where the girl was attempting to catch it. Instead, the adult fan snatched it right from her hands.
DeVore mentioned in a separate post that her son bravely attempted to retrieve the ball. “Cleveland’s mom is here,” she noted, expressing disappointment that the game’s local broadcast chose not to show the incident unfold. It was the Tampa Bay broadcast that caught the moment live.
After the game, due to public backlash, Quinn returned the ball, although some felt it wasn’t quite the same. DeVore expressed her gratitude to the Tampa fans and noted that their actions made a difference. “My daughter and I cried happy tears,” she shared with pride for her children’s response and gratitude toward the Rays community.
In a post-game moment, Rays reporter Ryan Bass delivered a baseball to the girl and her brother, turning the situation full circle. He shared DeVore’s message, thanking everyone for their heartfelt support during the evening.
The incident generated mixed reactions online; while Quinn claimed he returned the ball, the controversy over his initial actions overshadowed that gesture. The Rays clinched a 3-2 victory in this game.
