Week 1 of the NFL season feels like a celebration for many fans, especially for those who have been eagerly anticipating the chance to dive into fantasy football. They’ve done their due diligence, maybe even while snuggling up on the couch, ready to lock in lineups that could give them a winning edge. But suddenly, a jarring notification appeared on the fantasy platform: something was amiss.
Just when users thought they were geared up for a successful fantasy day, they found themselves unable to adjust player selections. A ticking clock showed that kickoff was nearing, and anxiety began to set in. Unfortunately, no magical Football Santa was coming to the rescue; instead, it seemed the game was already on a rough path.
As the incomplete lineups were locked in, it’s understandable that many users were frustrated. “Great, now my chances of winning are gone,” they likely thought. It’s a disappointing twist—like a children’s rhyme ending with nothing but a lump of coal.
Users on FanDuel’s daily fantasy platform faced a rough experience this week. About 90 minutes before games were set to kick off, various functions on the site malfunctioned, preventing them from crafting or modifying their lineups.
This was a significant issue, particularly since many participants often make last-minute adjustments based on important updates, especially injury reports. Additionally, those who had already paid for spots in contests (with the intention of filling their rosters later) struggled to finalize their entries, resulting in potentially incomplete or unintended player selections.
Users noted the scope of the outage on social media, but FanDuel hadn’t specified exactly how many were affected as of Monday afternoon.
“A lot of users were having issues,” a FanDuel representative admitted. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t resolve all of them before kickoff.”
Some users attempting to manage their rosters received error messages saying, “An unexpected error occurred. Please close this modal and try again. If the issue persists, please contact customer support.” Meanwhile, the app simply indicated “Content Unavailable. There was an error. Please try again later.” But alas, there was no later, as the games commenced and lineups were locked with the problems unresolved.
The following day, FanDuel started offering refunds or credits to affected users, calculating amounts based on their entries and subtracting any winnings earned.
“For instance, if you had $10 worth of entries and won $5, you’d receive a $5 refund,” the spokesperson explained.
The FanDuel Customer Support account addressed the incident on X, acknowledging their shortcomings on Tuesday afternoon.
“To our DFS customers — we understand that the site issues yesterday were unacceptable. Week 1 of the NFL should be festive, and we certainly dropped the ball. We’ve looked into the matter and are issuing refunds for the net losses to affected customers. We’re dedicated to enhancing your DFS experience, with more exciting offerings for Week 2 and beyond.”
However, not all users were satisfied with the compensation, including Josh Engleman, a YouTuber focusing on fantasy insights.
He shared his frustration on X: “Thanks for playing our contest. But instead of returning your $750 in actual money, here’s $750 in bonus cash, which you have to use within 7 days.”
This bonus cash can’t be withdrawn and is limited to entering additional FanDuel contests.
Interestingly, competitors took the opportunity to chime in. The official DraftKings account remarked, “Your DFS home should probably be somewhere that values DFS. We’ve noticed that some companies just don’t care, and we’re not surprised.”
FanDuel eventually restored its site functionality, but not before the 1 p.m. games had started, locking the rosters for contests related to those matchups.
“After the earlier games started, everything returned to normal,” the spokesperson said. “However, the investigation into this issue continues; we’re delving deeper into it.”
As of now, it’s unclear how many users experienced these problems, and FanDuel has yet to disclose the total amount of refunds or credits given. The chaos of Week 1 left fans yearning for a smoother experience.
