Controversy Surrounds Ravens Owner’s Comments on Lamar Jackson
During a press conference on Monday, Steve Bisciotti, the owner of the Baltimore Ravens, stirred discontent among fans and NFL analysts with his comments regarding quarterback Lamar Jackson.
When questioned about whether he had consulted Jackson before he made the decision to let go of head coach John Harbaugh, Bisciotti acknowledged he did have a conversation with him. However, he described Jackson as “non-confrontational” and noted that he did not play a “large role” in the decision.
Bisciotti further clarified that while Jackson does have some influence, it lacks the weight of formal authority when it comes to hiring a new coach.
This led to a comment from Jason Whitlock on Blaze TV, who suggested that Bisciotti was essentially saying Jackson lacks leadership qualities. He pointed out that true leaders don’t shy away from conflict—they actually tackle it. “That’s not Lamar Jackson,” Whitlock asserted.
Whitlock also mentioned that Jackson is an impressive quarterback and can make plays, but he stopped short of saying he embodies the traditional leadership expected of QBs like Ray Lewis or Ed Reed.
He implied that fans who expect Jackson to be more involved in team decisions might not fully grasp his nature. Bisciotti, as Whitlock noted, likely understands who Jackson is—not a business powerhouse but rather “just a guy.” Jackson’s mother, Felicia, has been influential in negotiations since his NFL career began, serving as his manager.
Whitlock expressed concern that if Jackson grows frustrated with the media discussions about “player empowerment,” it could create rifts between him and Bisciotti.
He contrasted Jackson’s situation with that of iconic Ravens’ leaders, drawing a clear line that Bisciotti isn’t viewing Jackson through the same lens as these past stars. “We have a great quarterback who enjoys video games, but he has difficulties staying healthy across a full season,” he remarked, emphasizing that while they want to keep him, he isn’t treated like a legendary figure such as Ray Lewis.
