Discussion on National Guard Deployment in Washington
Alyssa Farr Griffin, a former aide in the White House, expresses her views on the deployment of President Trump’s National Guard in Washington, suggesting she aims to align with Democratic principles in this matter.
She notes, “He thinks the capital should exemplify the best of America, but I also feel he manages to do something that Trump is particularly good at.” Griffin adds, “There’s a crucial and reasonable conversation happening about federal law enforcement and the use of National Guard on American streets. We should engage in that discussion.” She mentions Trump’s assertion that there’s minimal crime in D.C.
Recently, the president announced the deployment of around 800 National Guard personnel to assist the Metropolitan Police Departments in controlling crime rates in the capital.
This comes despite data indicating urban crime has actually decreased by 32% since 2023, with violent crime down 26% compared to this year.
Reports from NBC4 indicate that investigations were initiated last month concerning MPD commander Michael Pulliam, who is alleged to have manipulated crime statistics for his district while on leave.
Reflecting on her experience, Griffin shares, “I lived there for ten years, so I know the area well. You notice a lot of crime, and it can really affect how you feel. It seems the statistics don’t capture everything, as some communities didn’t feel safe a few years back.” She continues, “He’s urging the Democrats to see that the situation is actually better than it appears, pointing out that crime is a persistent issue.”
In contrast, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, alongside other Democratic mayors and legislators, criticized the Trump administration’s decision, labeling it “unstable and unprecedented.” She emphasized her daily efforts to prevent a complete disaster in the region.
