Farmers Gather 400 Acres for Father with ALS

Community Rallies for Farmer Facing ALS Diagnosis

More than 100 farmers in Minnesota have come together to support one of their own after a serious health diagnosis.

In Pork County, the local farming community showed incredible solidarity on September 24 when they gathered to help farmer Mark Holy during a difficult time.

This past summer, Holy was diagnosed with ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. According to information from the Mayo Clinic, the condition typically starts with symptoms like muscle cramps, weakness in limbs, and, eventually, affects the control of muscles required for movement, speaking, eating, and breathing. Sadly, there is currently no cure for this life-threatening illness.

In a show of support, his neighbors decided to harvest over 400 acres of sugar beet fields, which were incredibly important to Holy. Although he found it tough to leave the work to others, he expressed deep gratitude for the community’s help.

“It’s bittersweet. I hope that we can do that, but God has a plan,” he shared. “I want to thank everyone… who’s helping my family when we’re hurt?”

His wife, Charlene, commented on the unexpected support, stating that the community means everything to them. “You don’t want such a horrible illness, but when people stepped up like this, we were just surprised. We are so grateful. This is a love in action,” she explained.

Mark’s son, Ryan, mentioned that they plan to leave some of the beets for their family to harvest together, hoping for a chance to work alongside his father again. “Hopefully he can be on the field again,” he said.

This isn’t the first time farmers have rallied for each other. In 2020, a group of farmers in North Dakota paused their own work to aid neighbors in need after a medical emergency.
