Staff Revolt at Vanity Fair Over Melania Trump Cover
A group of staff members at Vanity Fair have expressed their discontent, threatening to resign if Melania Trump, the First Lady, appears on the magazine’s cover. This follows an internal push aimed at encouraging her to agree to a photoshoot for the publication.
A mid-level editor at Daily Mail stated, “I’m leaving the door and some of my team will join me.” It seems the staff is staunchly opposed to what they perceive as normalizing the current administration’s conduct. One employee asserted, “We’re not going to do that. We will stand by what is right.” The individual even mentioned, “If it comes down to bagging groceries at Trader Joe’s, then so be it. If Melania is featured, half of us are out, and that’s a promise.”
Interestingly, Melania Trump has never graced the cover of Vanity Fair while Anna Wintour has been at the helm, unlike past First Ladies like Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, who have appeared multiple times. The nearest Melania came to being on the cover was a 2017 issue of the magazine’s Mexican version.
The new editor, Mark Guiducci, appears to be attempting to shift the magazine’s image toward broader appeal, potentially distancing it from what some staff view as excessive partisanship. There are murmurs that if Guiducci is wise, he might use this situation to address internal conflicts and address the intolerant attitudes some perceive among the staff.
It’s difficult to avoid the notion that the staff’s reactions may reveal deeper biases, particularly given Melania’s immigrant background. Some might argue that Vanity Fair is grappling with significant issues surrounding intolerance and bias within its ranks.
