A fashion designer has introduced a “gay sheep” yarn at a New York fashion event, aiming to raise funds for rams who often face shorter lives due to their preference for same-sex partners. Yes, this is a serious initiative.
Michael Schmidt, a designer from Los Angeles known for dressing celebrities like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift, debuted this line to highlight “human rights stories.” He found that sheep showing same-sex preferences are often stigmatized and sent to slaughterhouses without any reprieve.
Items made for the showcase included hats, dungarees, dressing gowns, and sailing hats, all crafted from the wool of these gay sheep.
A German non-profit, rainbow wool, which rescues single sheep, estimates that around one in twelve sheep are gay. They partnered with the gay dating app Grindr to host a fashion show called ‘I Wool Survive,’ letting these sheep receive admiration and love from the community.
“I don’t consider this fashion,” Schmidt remarked, as noted by the New York Times. “I see it more as an art project, emphasizing that homosexuality exists not just in humans but in the animal kingdom as well.”
He continued, “This challenges the idea that being gay is a choice; it’s part of nature.”
Tristan Pineiro, from Grindr, commented, “You can’t claim that sheep have been influenced by woke culture.”
Research indicates that roughly 8 percent of rams prefer same-sex partners, according to Charles Roselli, a professor at Oregon Health & Science University. If a ram shows no interest in ewes and favors male companionship instead, it can pose economic challenges for farms, leading to premature death since these rams are often not fertile.
