Kolb Steps Down as CFDA Chief After Protest Incident

NEW YORK — The longtime CEO of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Steven Kolb, announced his resignation on Friday, just days after he was filmed restraining two protesters during a runway show in New York.

In a statement, Kolb expressed pride in his accomplishments, saying, “I am enormously proud of what we have built together and believe this is the right moment for both me and the organization to begin a new chapter.”

After leading the CFDA for 20 years, Kolb’s departure marks a significant shift for the organization, which serves as a primary trade body for the fashion industry.

The incident in question took place at a runway show for Cos, an H&M brand, where Kolb was seen forcibly restraining two employees from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, covering their mouths during the confrontation. The moment shocked many within the fashion community.

Known for his respected presence in New York’s fashion scene, Kolb later apologized for his actions and announced he would take a leave of absence pending an investigation.

The CFDA released a statement honoring Kolb as a “dedicated leader and tireless champion of American fashion,” expressing gratitude for his years of service and leadership.

Earlier in the week, Moira Colley, senior director of media relations for PETA in New York, mentioned the group’s intention to meet with Kolb to discuss the removal of wool and animal skins from clothing. Initially, PETA considered filing a police report against Kolb but decided against it after consulting with legal advisors.

Following Kolb’s announcement, PETA reiterated their desire to meet with him and emphasized hopes that others in the industry would join in taking significant actions to address animal cruelty.

PETA acknowledged Kolb’s previous efforts to eliminate fur from CFDA’s runway shows.

The protest was led by Andrija Barak, who shouted slogans regarding wool usage. In footage of the event, Kolb can be seen covering Barak’s mouth and restraining her in an attempt to continue the show, while also pushing Mason Melito and covering her mouth as well.
