Two people were killed and two others injured in a shooting near Moss Landing State Beach early Monday, according to authorities.
Deputies with the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, along with California State Parks personnel and California Highway Patrol officers, responded to reports of gunfire on Jetty Road shortly before 2 a.m. They found two people dead at the scene.
A third person who had been shot later arrived at a nearby hospital. Their condition was not known. Another injured person was taken from the scene to a hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The identities of the two people who died are being withheld until forensic examinations are complete and their families have been notified.
“This is a tragic incident that has resulted in the loss of two lives,” Monterey County Sheriff Tina M. Nieto said. Detectives are working to determine what happened, she added, and asked anyone with information to contact investigators, even if it seems minor.
Jetty Road and Moss Landing State Beach were closed at the sheriff’s office’s request while the investigation continued. Authorities said there was no active threat to the community.
Investigators have not said what led to the shooting. The sheriff’s office said the case remains active and that further details would be released when available.
State Sen. John Laird described the shooting as an “unspeakable horror” and offered condolences to those affected. He said the loss of life had brought profound pain to the Central Coast and thanked the sheriff’s office for its response.
