Father causes backlash by suggesting a two-week trip alone with his 8-month-old baby

New Dad Sparks Controversy Over Proposed Vacation Without Wife

A recent discussion on Reddit has generated quite a bit of debate. A new dad, who has an 8-month-old son, decided to take two weeks off from work, but with a catch—he planned to leave his wife behind while he and their child went away.

In his post to Reddit’s “Am I the A-Hole” forum, he detailed the situation. His wife, he explained, works a demanding job with little flexibility, while he is able to work remotely. He paid for the time off and suggested using some of his paid time off (PTO) for a family trip. His thought was that they could have a nice, relaxing holiday, potentially somewhere like a resort—easy travel, minimal fuss.

The dad believed this break would allow both of them some much-needed rest, especially for his wife who might catch up on sleep during their absence. However, his wife was not on board with the idea. She firmly stated, “No, no,” indicating that she didn’t want to discuss it further.

Her objections included worries about separation anxiety for their baby and how it might impact their daily routines. In an attempt to find a middle ground, he suggested alternatives, such as taking his mother along, picking a closer destination, or even going solo. Yet, he seemed to feel a bit of a loss, suggesting staying at home felt like a waste, especially since travel is something they both enjoy.

The internet reaction was swift. Many commenters felt his plan was unfair, deeming two weeks away from his wife and child excessive. Some pointed out that an infant’s need for bonding with both parents should take precedence. One commenter suggested that if their roles were reversed, and his wife proposed such a trip, she might face backlash as well.

A licensed marriage and family therapist chimed in, cautioning that leaving an 8-month-old for such an extended period could affect attachment and bonding. They recommended shorter trips or local getaways instead.

Despite the backlash, there were also voices of support. Some commenters understood the father’s longing for a change of scenery and appreciated his willingness to engage in parenting actively. They argued that he should be capable of managing their child alone, suggesting daily video calls between him and his wife while he was away.

Ultimately, clear and open communication appears to be key here. Experts recommend that couples need to reaffirm their partnership and teamwork, especially when it comes to parenting.
