Father killed pregnant wife and attacked daughters because he wanted a son

Tragic Stabbing Case in Upstate New York

A man in upstate New York has been accused of fatally stabbing his pregnant wife and attempting to harm their two young daughters, reportedly out of anger. The victim’s father claims this violent act was driven by the father’s desire for a son.

Drew Garnier, 33, has confessed to the repeated stabbing of his five-months-pregnant wife, Samantha Garnier, 29, according to the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office. Tragically, both Samantha and the unborn child lost their lives in the attack. The couple’s young daughter is now recovering from what have been described as “serious injuries,” as stated by the DA.

Gregory Vernagaro, the father of the deceased, explained to the court that Garnier’s violent actions stemmed from his frustration over Samantha’s pregnancy with another girl. “He wanted a boy,” Vernagaro shared during a victim impact statement.

Last month, Garnier pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and two counts of first-degree assault, both classified as Class B violent felonies. He received a 30-year prison sentence last week, which includes 15 years of supervised release as part of a plea deal. This arrangement aims to spare the couple’s surviving daughters from the trauma of a trial.

District Attorney Sean Smith remarked that the plea allowed them to avoid putting the young girls through the harrowing experience of testifying about the traumatic events they witnessed. The court has imposed a no-contact order preventing Garnier from seeing his surviving daughters until 2056.

Judge John Hubbard addressed Garnier with a strong message: “You took your life and injured your children. They had the right to expect protection from you.” Meanwhile, the two young girls have been adopted by their maternal grandfather, who expressed his commitment to their well-being. “I’m their father now,” Vernagaro stated after the verdict. “I’ll protect them.”

Samantha was supposed to give birth in February. Her daughters, Adelina and Izzy, are still on the road to recovery, under the care of their grandfather.
