Yossi Meir Jan, 57, the father of released Israeli hostage Almog Meir Jan, 21, died on Saturday just hours before his son was rescued by Israeli forces. His family said the cause of death was trauma from eight months of captivity.

The father of Almog Meir Jan, one of four hostages being held by Hamas, was found dead in his home on Saturday, Israeli media reported Saturday night.

He had been ill, but his family told Israeli media they believed he died of grief.

Yossi’s sister, Dina, added in an interview with KAN Bet on Saturday night that her father was “glued to the TV, obsessed with every bit of information…he wanted to know everything about what was happening to him, what he was going through.”
The Israel Times Added:
“He lost 20 kilos and was just too weak to cope,” she said. “He closed himself off and didn’t want to see people. Everyone was worried about Yossi, but he couldn’t communicate with anyone.”
Dina said she received a call from the military informing her that her nephew had been rescued, but that the officer had been unable to contact Yossi.

“I drove around frantically, knocked and called ‘Yossi, Yossi, Yossi’ but there was no answer. His door was open and I saw him sleeping in the living room. I called out ‘Yossi’ but there was no answer. I saw the colour of his skin, I touched him but he was dead,” she said.
Yossi Meir Jan will be buried in a private funeral on Sunday, as will Chief Inspector Arnon Zamora, leader of the Israeli police counter-terrorism unit Yamam, who was killed during a rescue operation in Gaza.
